About Company

Chemistry and Pharmacy Cooperative (ESPEFA) was set up in 1946 as a Pharmaceutical Cooperative ATOM on the initiative of the following pharmacists: Stanisław Szymański, MSc., Aleksander Kaszycki, MSc., and Jan Szustow, MSc. On 9th September 1946 the founding meeting took place in Kraków, 2, ul. Św. Jana, where 10 pharmacists with a master's degree declared their accession to the cooperative as the founder members.

The years 1946 and 1947 were the organizational period in the Cooperative life aimed at opening a galena laboratory and constructing a production profile. Having obtained vacant space the galena laboratory started manufacturing of various syrups, tinctures, turmeric extract, corn removal liquid, salicyl alcohol, Burov tablets and sulfathiazole tablets.

On 23rd April 1949 General Meeting of stakeholders passed a resolution changing the old name, ATOM Cooperative, into Chemistry and Pharmacy Cooperative ESPEFA.

In the years 1950 to 1975 the ESPEFA Cooperative was the instigator, or co-author, of running the production of 11 new drugs and 8 pharmacy-chemistry half-products.

Tenancy of the buildings and scattered locations put the Cooperation at a disadvantage. In the meantime the demand for ESPEFA products was growing on the Polish market. This led the executives to making successful efforts and building an adequate factory, which enabled the large-scale production of new drugs. An investment programme included erection a new complex of two buildings joined together. The construction was put into operation on 2nd January 1989. Taking possession of the factory building secured conditions for production an development of the enterprise.

In October 1993 the Shop and Service Centre housing the Marketing Department and the Pharmacy Warehouse was put in use. In 1997 the ESPEFA Cooperative received the Licence to manufacture a pharmaceutical or a medical material.

With gradual progress in extension of the plant the successive modernization of equipment and technological process became possible. In 2004, as the result of rapid development the company was awarded the BSI Management Systems Certificate which confirmed applying and using Quality Management System in conformity with BS EN ISO 9001:2000.

Today ESPEFA is a modern pharmaceutical plant, where the medicines are produced in compliance with GMP requirements. The Cooperative owes its technological and economic achievements in production entirely to the professional staff. Our experienced managers not only maintain the quality of manufactured drugs, but also work on the implementation of technological and pharmaceutical innovations.
